The Key to Getting Your Topic Approved

4/19/2015

When you are about to start with your thesis, the first thing that comes to mind is whether you will be able to choose the right topic and whether the topic will be one that the thesis guide will approve of. For those of you who have gone through the topic approval process, know how difficult it is to get a nod from your mentor, you are probably nodding in consent with a knowing smirk on the face, for those of you who are yet to experience it, thank your stars for bringing you here. There are something that you need to be sure about before you finally zero in on your topic.

Keep the idea fresh and original. You may get tempted to copy from the works found in libraries and off the web, and while it is healthy to refer, copying is a downright NO! A fresh topic leaves you with a lot of scope to express yourself and that is what will work in your favor.

Choose a topic that you can relate with. Remember, choosing the topic is not a one-time affair. It is a wedding and you will have to stick with it, so choose a topic that you know you will be able to write on, with ease.

Choose to take help from the right resources. Friends may help a few times, but you know you can never be sure about the accuracy and the authenticity of the help that they give you. Instead try getting in touch with someone who knows how to actually write a thesis and take their help in choosing your topic.

Keep your synopsis or proposal relevant to your topic. Staying in the introductory notes might indicate a prospectively loose thesis project, no mentor would approve of a topic if you do not concentrate on the quality of the proposal.

Remember the take of is the most important for a pleasant flight!

When you take up a PhD course, it is impossible that you would not know the level of efforts and perseverance required in the course. Now that you are aware of all the blood and sweat involved in the process, you might as well be prepared to give it your best shot. This means that come what may, you have to study for the course and also attempt the much dreaded PhD thesis. When you start thinking about the PhD thesis, the first thing that comes to mind it getting a book printed and submitting it. Well it is one of the things that need to be done, but unfortunately one of the last things that need to be done. There are a number of other steps that need to be checked of the list before having your book printed.

The topic: Choosing a topic is the first step and needs to be done carefully, once the topic gets approved, you do not want to be stuck with something that is difficult for you to work on. Make sure you consult the right people before you make up your mind.

The synopsis: The topic you choose, will need to be explained to your guide so he or she can decide whether it has an appeal. Keep the synopsis crisp and include the points that will show your prospective study in good light. Taking third party opinion in the process definitely helps if you want to get it right the first time.

The thesis: The thesis writing itself is a great task. Once all the approvals are in place, make sure to research about the topic as well as how the thesis is formatted and finish it off in style. When you know you are right, the result only becomes sweeter.

Finally have the book printed and bound and celebrate the success of your PhD thesis!

Meta-analysis for Thesis Research

10/15/2014

Meta-analysis is a statistical technique mostly used by social students and in medicine and psychology in particular. This analysis avoids wasting time and is used to analyze statistical data used from various studies over a period of time. Meta analysis uses large volumes of data avoiding marginal errors, and helps in interpreting and drawing perfect conclusions. Researchers say that the meta analysis should clearly state a protocol which explains the aim and methodology of the study and should be conducted like a scientific experiment. Two types of data is used in meta analysis which are Individual Participant Data (IPD) and Aggregate Data (AD). Meta analysis is conducted in various ways which are Fixed effects model, Random effects model, Quality effects model and IVhet model. Each model is used according to the type of study and analysis required. Meta analysis has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on various situations.

 Advantages of Meta Analysis:

• Meta analysis reduces the complexity of research.

• Best used for medical and psychology studies.

• Produces quality assessments and reduces repeated research or analysis.

• Best results can be obtained by using larger volumes of data.

• Inconsistencies in results can be analyzed and quantified.

Disadvantages of Meta Analysis:

• Researcher must rely on old data or databases.

• This analysis has scope for biasness and skewed data.

• Validity of results can be compromised.

• One small error during the study can make the entire analysis a failure.

With its own advantages and disadvantages Meta analysis is being used widely in various fields and this analysis can reduce the time frame of the study and reduces expenses and repeated studies. The quantitative results of the meta analysis studies must be interpreted very carefully and the analysis also must be carefully done with rigorous rules.

Management Lessons from Mythological Philosophy

As the industrial world is being encountered with very different and more difficult problems both inside and outside organizations, the existing theories and models in the domain of management is not proving out to be capable enough for combating them. The existing theories and models in management need a major revision, so that those can accommodate the existing problems being faced by the industrial world. Owing to that reason, the researchers across the world in the field of management domain are gradually looking back at the philosophies of the mythological school of thought, and they are trying to remold the existing theories from those schools of thought.

When it comes to adapting the management lessons from mythological philosophies, the mostly discussed mythological epics are The Ramayana and The Mahabharata. The main points taken from these epics are the kind of structure and strategies used in the political and organizational setting, negotiation skills, economic interpretation of the verses of Lord Krishna, how to deal with competitors etc. The mythological characters were considered as various hierarchical positions, and the kind of interactions and flow of communication among those parties are tried to be adapted by modern management researchers. Scientific innovations were also considered as one of the premier business solutions, and there are several organizations, which are trying to emulate those in present world setting. Apart from these two epics, the verses Kabir are also taken in order to implement several innovative corporate social responsibility (CSR) solutions in various organizational settings. In order to implement these solutions, firstly comparative mapping of the socio-economic patterns of the eras have been carried out at the first place, and then in accordance with the nature of the present industrial scenario, those phenomena have been modified and tailor-made for making them compatible and implementable.

Difference between Literature Survey and Meta Analysis

8/22/2014

Many times it happens that in order to substantiate a research question for a research based study, researchers carry out an extensive review of literature, in the due course of that process, they try to review every possible literature, which are being encountered by them. In doing so, besides carrying out review of relevant literature, they also come up with review of unnecessary literature, as well. Considering the limited time and other resources allocated to carry out the research based study, this process can turn out to be a total wastage, as to carry out a research work properly, review of relevant literature is required, not the survey of literature. And this case is mostly seen, when the researchers try to carry out a Meta analysis, and end up with a literature survey, based on which no research gap can be substantiated.

The aforementioned discussion can turn out to be clear, if an example of such a scenario can be cited. Suppose a researcher wants to carry out a Meta analysis on the nexus between energy consumption and economic growth. The Meta analysis should be carried out based on the articles, which talk about nexus between energy consumption and gross domestic product, energy consumption and gross national product, per capita energy consumption and per capita income, electricity consumption and economic growth, etc. based on the contexts of single country or cross country analysis. This review of literature can prove out to be a significant one. However, considering topics like petroleum consumption and economic growth, petroleum consumption and balance of payment deficit, energy consumption and environmental degradation, etc. can make the review of literature out of the track, will broaden the research area unnecessarily, thereby, making the entire research based study lose its focus. This can be a good literature survey, but a very poor Meta analysis.
